Alongside the likes of Marek Hamsik and Ezequiel Lavezzi at Napoli, Edison Cavani has simply set the world alight in Serie A with his strong ability on the ball and powerful nature inside the opposition’s third.
Whilst he has since been seemingly locked in his strike-partner’s shadow, both domestically behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and on the international scene with Luis Suarez, Uruguay’s burly forward has all the makings of a world star capable of producing the goods at any level.
A distinct lack of game time since moving to PSG has subsequently affected the striker’s chances of reaching his full potential however, so with the January transfer window now once again opening cheque-books everywhere around Europe, could Edison Cavani soon be gone from Ligue 1, and on his way to the Premier League?
English football would suit Cavani down to the ground for a number of different reasons. He has proven experience at the very top, and whilst playing in the Premier League certainly comes with its own set of unique tasks, the Uruguayan hit-man would surely not disappoint fans of the English game.
Like a traditional English centre-forward, PSG’s no. 9 can be an effective force in any aerial battle, hold his own up top in the isolated loan-striker role, and prove punishing in front of goal with his gifted knack for finishing. Whilst his work-rate in the past few seasons hasn’t quite been to the standard that he achieved during his Napoli days, Cavani still likely has the desire and determination necessary to make it in the Premier League.
Arsenal, with the constant media circus that surrounds Arsene Wenger and his transfer policy at the Emirates, are reported favourites to land the bustling forward, as they have been ever since Edison Cavani first fell out of favour with the Parisian giants. Whilst some Gunners fans remain sceptical that such funds are available, since Alexis Sanchez was purchased this summer in the region of £35million, the Uruguayan target-man’s potential arrival in north London would nevertheless be well received all round by the Emirates faithful.
If such a move were to happen, the prospect of playing Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Edison Cavani alongside each other at the Emirates would likely prove too good an opportunity to turn down for Arsene Wenger. What this would mean for the recently acquired Danny Welbeck remains a matter still up for discussion, however.
Another potential stumbling block in this deal could also be PSG’s asking price, which is rumoured to be around as much as £60million in some reports. Manchester United may therefore be in the strongest position to sign Cavani if their recent spending habits are anything to go by. As Louis van Gaal already has the likes of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao at his disposal however, a dramatic move to Old Trafford remains questionable for the former Napoli hero.
None of this is to say that the player in question is completely finished with this current employers though. Although playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic was never going to be an ideal scenario for Cavani, the Uruguayan still serves an important role for PSG, but being left out of several important cup games this season hasn’t exactly helped his situation.
Whilst such a debate may amount to no more than loose talk and transfer gossip, it remains true that PSG’s apparent want-away striker is a constant favourite on the transfer scene, and with the Premier League and Arsenal reported as great admirers of the Uruguayan, perhaps such a deal could happen sooner rather than later.
