Hands up if you’re growing tired of Luka Modric? In terms of transfer sagas he’s pushing Robin Van Persie to wire in terms of irritation and longevity. But with no discernible end in sight and the prospect of him staying at White Hart Lane looking ever so likely manager Andre Villas-Boas has challenged the Croatian to knuckle down and return to the first team picture. But with the 26-year-old still angling for a move to Spain and chairman Daniel Levy unflinchingly ridged in his valuation it could be a cocktail for disaster. Levy is reluctant to accept anything lower than £40 million for Modric but holding the playmaker against his will could jeopardise the harmonious environment Villas-Boas is hoping to build ahead of his first term in the dugout. With the Portguese tactician eager to make some additions to key areas before the transfer window shuts it may be in the clubs best interests for Levy to cut his losses on Modric. After all, one player doesn’t make a team.

“He is training alone because we decided to do that until his mental state is ready to return to the team. It is important that, in the coming days, he understands he must return to the first team. We respect the player’s ambition, but he must also respect the club.” Andre Villas-Boas tells Luka Modric he must face up to beginning the season with Spurs
