Liverpool transfer target Darwin Nunez will leave Benfica at the end of the season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, but there is plenty of competition for his signature.
The Lowdown: Liverpool eyeing Nunez
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting young players in Europe this season, producing a string of influential performances for Benfica.
Incredibly, Nunez has scored 24 Primeira Liga goals in as many appearances, with just 20 of those being starts, as well as bagging a strike against Liverpool in the Champions League for good measure.
The Uruguayan has been linked with a summer move to the Reds, who are thought to be ‘convinced’ about signing him after the squad and club chiefs were left amazed by his qualities in last week’s quarter-final clash (Sport Witness).
The Latest: Romano provides update
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Romano gave a key update on Nunez’s future, claiming he will definitely leave Benfica in the summer for about €80m (£67m), with a number of Premier League clubs mentioned as possible suitors:
“Darwin Nunez will leave Benfica in the summer, fee around €80m. His new agent will now meet with many top clubs to explore opportunities.
“Man United already discussed his name internally – Arsenal wanted him last January as West Ham but Darwin was not for sale.”

The Verdict: Depends on outgoings
There is no denying Nunez’s potential, given his remarkable form this season, but it is far easier to see him joining an Arsenal or a Manchester United over Liverpool.
That’s due to the Reds already having a plethora of fantastic attacking options, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino all battling for minutes.
However, if one of those players were to leave – Salah, Mane and Firmino are all entering the final 12 months of their contracts – then Nunez would be an excellent capture.
Aged just 22, the man hailed as a ‘massive’ player by Jurgen Klopp himself could join the likes of Jota and Diaz as the next generation of Liverpool’s famous front three.
